JAPAN DYE BIZ TURNS AROUND
TOKYO (FNS) -- Four years ago when the "yen-daka," or high yen, struck Japan's textile dyeing-finishing industry, which was highly dependent on export business, most everybody was predicting gloom for the industry's future.
But the situation began to turn around last year. The reversal is raising hopes that the textile finishing industry in industrial countries like Japan can compete with low-cost countries.
It is happening as the result of industry restructuring. Major dyeing plants in this country have cut back work forces by nearly 30 percent since 1985, shifted the main thrust of their business to the domestic market, ...
