THE Himalayan balsam and the foxgloves were in close proximity. Spectacular flowers, both of them, very colourful and very imposing.

You may guess that the Himalayan balsam is a foreign flower, and you would be right. One authoritive book affirms that the flower was first introduced into England in 1839, and was subsequently grown in green houses. Then it escaped. It gradually spread into suitable locations in Britain.
