Jul. 23--The Food and Drug Administration has approved Amgen's newest anemia drug for chemotherapy patients, a move that clears the way into a multibillion-dollar market dominated by Johnson & Johnson.
Amgen's drug, Aranesp, is a longer-lasting version of a pair of blockbusters -- Amgen's Epogen and Johnson & Johnson's Procrit -- which had combined worldwide sales of more than $5 billion last year. All three drugs treat anemia by stimulating oxygen-carrying red blood cells, but because of a business agreement, Epogen has been limited to patients on kidney dialysis, while ...
