ACTIVISTS CALLED on the cosmetics industry last week to voluntarily remove phthalates from their beauty and personal care products, charging the chemicals pose a particular danger to pregnant women.

However, industry groups dismiss the claims, insisting that an extensive body of scientific research and data confirm the safety of phthalates.

At a Washington, D.C., news conference, three activist groups issued a report that says phthalates--which have been linked to birth defects in laboratory animals--were found in 52 of 72 name-brand beauty products tested. Only one of the products listed phthalates on the label.
