Major auto insurance companies are making it difficult for inner-city residents of Chicago to obtain coverage from them, the Illinois insurance commissioner and the Illinois Public Action Council charged recently.

Major insurance companies "could make it more convenient" for residents of Chicago's inner city neighborhoods to obtain auto coverage, according to Zack Stamp, director of the Illinois Insurance Department.

While major insurers are not refusing to write auto coverage, insurers are not giving contracts to agents in Chicago's inner city, he said in an interview.
