Holding onto tradition is a challenge for any family, but it appears especially difficult for Hmong who have been raised to practice animism.
Animal sacrifices and incantations to exorcise evil are just a couple examples of animism rituals. It is a belief system in ancestral worship, supernatural power and interconnectedness among living things.
Many Madison area Hmong manage to retain their religious traditions. Some of their practices, however, have been adapted to suit American lifestyles.
