PORTLAND, ORE. -- The HomeRF Working Group is repositioning its wireless-network standard to stress voice, range, and the ability to complement other wireless-network technologies.
The intent, said HomeRF spokesman Wayne Caswell, is to "regain the shelf space and mind-share we lost [to 11Mbps 802.11b WiFi] over the past year because of HomeRF 1.0's lower speed (1.6Mbps)."
Only about a half dozen higher speed 10Mbps HomeRF 2.0 products are available, and only through Web sites, he noted. The first 2.0 products shipped only last September following the 2.0 standard's finalization in March 2001.
