ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Research Council (ARC) has made a plea for greater control of research grant allocations. At present, about $A500 million is given to universities each year through block funding. The ARC believes this money should go to competitive agencies such as the National Health & Medical Research Council and itself. It has also called for the present system of both block and competitive funding to be combined into a single competitive model. It says this would link grants to the cost of supporting them with salaries and equipment, which are not presently funded, by ARC grants. Salaries are met by universities while ...
