Research council push for bigger slice of pie.

ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Research Council (ARC) has made a plea for greater control of research grant allocations. At present, about $A500 million is given to universities each year through block funding. The ARC believes this money should go to competitive agencies such as the National Health & Medical Research Council and itself. It has also called for the present system of both block and competitive funding to be combined into a single competitive model.
