The European Court of Human Rights ruled Thursday France violated the European Human Rights Convention by blocking Nazi war collaborator Maurice Papon from seeking judicial appeal and a right to a fair trial.
The Strasbourg-based court's decision comes a day after a French judge rejected an appeal to free 91-year-old Papon, who is serving a 10-year jail sentence for overseeing the deportation of Jews to Nazi concentration camps in World War II.
The European Court said France violated convention articles granting defendants a right of access to a court and a right of appeal in criminal matters.
