Nearly two centuries after construction started on Clinton's Ditch - the first Erie Canal - a local historian has written a comprehensive and highly readable history of the canal through Cayuga County.
Michael Riley, recently appointed Mentz historian, spent more than three years researching and writing "Twelve and a Half Miles - The Erie Canal in Cayuga County." Riley is a devoted canal aficionado. His interest in canals began as a child, growing up in Schenectady.
