Soft drinks and pig herds in as many as eight European Union member states could be tainted with one of two illegal growth hormones, including one that causes human infertility, the European Commission reported July 11. The use of growth hormones in the EU is illegal.
The European Commission announced that 365 livestock farms in the Netherlands were banned from selling any live pigs because of concerns the animals were tainted with the growth hormone called MPA, which can cause human infertility. The other growth hormone is oestradiol. Farmers in Germany, Italy, Spain, and France have purchased live pigs from the farms in the Netherlands, which is one of the ...
