Concerns about running out of securities identification codes have prompted the London Stock Exchange to consider expanding its current seven-digit numbering system, called Sedol, to include alphanumeric characters.
"We are not worried about the issue right now and have a few years left," said Terry Allison, manager of the LSE's securities master file database department. He declined to specify when the exchange thinks it will run out of Sedols and said no decision has been reached on when the new alphanumeric identification code will be implemented or how many letters it would use.
