Driving home the spoils
ROLLS ROYCE considers itself fortunate to have had no models in stock in Kuwait on 2 August. The UK firm had sold its last new model at the end of June, and its showroom at the end of Fahd al-Salem Street was empty of both Rolls Royces and Bentleys. Other manufacturers were not so lucky: when invading Iraqi troops started looting shops in Kuwait, car showrooms were generally one of their first targets.
So many vehicles have now been taken to Iraq - including cars seized from fleeing expatriates at the Turkish and Jordanian frontiers - that Iraqi filling stations are reportedly having a hard time keeping up with demand for petrol. ...
