Our sidewalks, our parks and our town squares are public spaces. They belong to the commons; they are shared spaces that are available for all to use. Enjoyable public space gives us a good reason to wander about the city, pulls us out of isolation and lets us experience a day of unpredictable conversations and chance encounters.
Public spaces give us the opportunity to engage with others living in our neighbourhood, to discuss the issues of the week, to experience the culture of our place beyond our family, circle of friends and workplace. Without good public space we are left to depend on the media for culture and information.
