Jul. 28--My knowledge of solid-waste disposal ends at the curb, where my soil line connects to the municipal sewer system and goes heaven knows where.

Actually, it goes to the county sewage-treatment plant -- a service for which I and thousands of other county property owners pay a quarterly fee.

I don't know about you, but I never really think about sewage until the system breaks down. Twice in the last three years, I've had my soil line cleaned -- once for $114, the second time for $174 -- and any time I have to spend money, it makes an impression.
