A book in English on Vittorio De Sica is, above all, a cause for celebration. There is an embarrassing scarcity of monographs and collections of essays on De Sica, particularly in comparison to his colleagues Fellini, Visconti, or Rossellini whose careers have been examined in numerous volumes. Therefore the present volume, coming on the centenary of De Sica's birth, fills an important void in Itahan film literature. The only previous book in English on De Sica, John Daretta's Vittorio De Sica: A Guide to References and Resources (1982) is a summary of source material rather than a critical study.
