IRVINE, Calif., July 29 (AScribe Newswire) -- We've come a long way from pea plants. Exactly 180 years after Austrian monk Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics, was born, and 100 years after the first grant application for genetics research (it was rejected), UC Irvine researchers are now combining the study of genetics with computer technology to understand the roles played by genes in mental illness, prodding fruit flies (and perhaps humans one day) to live longer by manipulating genes, treating diseases of all stripes, and perhaps most important, examining the ethical issues that arise from this new-found knowledge.
