The national blood supply has reached a critical low. In the New York-Penn region, which includes Syracuse, only about a one-day supply is on the shelves, according to the American Red Cross.
An emergency blood drive was held Sunday at Carousel Center to help combat the problem. The drive collected 244 pints of blood, 44 more than an already ambitious goal of 200, officials said.
"It's impossible to say how these units will affect the blood supply, but it's certainly 244 more pints than we would have had if we didn't have the drive," said Tom Koeppe, operations manager for the Syracuse district.
