Behind Jesse Salcedo's gracious Woodside, Calif., home, yards away from the sort of pool one dreams of on a summer afternoon, stands an incongruous sight. A large white tepee points grandly skyward, the aroma of burning sage in the air.

Down from the house a bit, in a corner of this lovely acre-plus lot, Jesse Garcia, a friend who does some work for Salcedo, rhythmically strips the bark from sweet-smelling, straight-as-an-arrow young Douglas firs. The stacks of slender limbs are destined for tepees, as well.
