Rising sharply from the sea, the 600-foot-high walls of the Marin Headlands, in Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), appear impenetrable to hikers. But now a key 1-mile section of the Coastal Trail has been completed, climbing up and over the headlands to bridge the last gap in this 35-mile-long trail between Fort Funston in San Francisco and Point Reyes to the north. One way to hike the new section is on an invigorating 5-mile loop to Rodeo Lagoon (birding, beach picnicking), returning via Rodeo Valley Trail.
