Early morning exercise may increase your likelihood of picking up an infection, according to a new study published today.
Research involving competitive swimmers found that levels of cortisol - a hormone which suppresses the immune system - were higher in the morning compared to the evening before exercise and significantly higher after exercise.
The flow rate of saliva, which helps protect against bugs and viruses, was reduced by swimming and in the mornings was lower before exercise.
