Recent news reports have been both encouraging and discouraging for business. There was the revelation that first quarter real GDP advanced at an annual rate of only 5.6 percent compared with an earlier estimate of 5.8 percent. This was a matter of great concern for the stock market, even though a change of 0.2 percent is hardly worth mentioning.
That response is a reflection of the great sensitivity of the market to what it considers disappointing news in the present climate.
