ABOARD THE U.S. BRIG NIAGARA -- "All hands to take in sails," called out Deborah Hayes, fourth mate on the U.S. Brig Niagara.
The ship's crew climbed up from the relative dryness below decks into a light rain above as the two-masted, square-rigged tall ship sailed through Lake Superior's restless waves. As a single unit, nearly 40 mariners rushed to their assigned posts on either side of the ship, hoisting and releasing the ropes that control the tall ship's main and fore sails.
