November 7 will mark the 73rd birthday of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, but this year there is little, if anything, to celebrate. As winter begins, energy supplies are running short, sullen consumers are bracing for a long winter of worsening shortages and rumors of military coups are appearing almost daily in the Soviet media. Mikhail Gorbachev's patchwork outline for economic reform, a hastily cobbled compromise between the radical, market oriented 500 Days plan embraced by Gorbachev's archrival, Boris Yeltsin, and the government's more cautious package, satisfied few and holds little promise of putting bread back on the empty shelves anytime soon.
