John Paul II has put a prelate already favored to follow him as pope in an even stronger position by naming Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, 68, as the successor to famed Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, 75, in Milan.
The question of who would succeed Martini, a Jesuit, has long been viewed as an important piece of pre-conclave jockeying.
Born in the Milan archdiocese in 1934, Tettamanzi has since 1995 served as archbishop of Genoa, becoming a cardinal in 1998. Tettamanzi is a well-regarded theologian, especially in the field of sexual morality and bioethics. He is thought to have contributed to the pope's 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae.
