Bands aren't supposed to improve with age.
As history has demonstrated all too many times, as bands grow older, they lose their edge, their verve. They quit taking chances and settle into a formula, thus beginning a descent into mediocrity.
The Flaming Lips, however, are that rare exception. Now in their 18th year, the Oklahoma City trio of Wayne Coyne, Steven Drozd and Michael Ivins has never seemed more vital, its quest for harmonic and melodic bliss never more daring and fruitful.
