Coast Guard awards four Gulf shipyards $11 billion in contracts."
Well, not quite. But the recent awarding of the Coast Guard's Deepwater Program contract is big news down South, It could provide work for Gulf shipyards for up to 30 years.
In June, the Deepwater contract was awarded to Integrated Coast Guard Systems, a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. (See story, page 22.) The contract calls for the first delivery of ships, and upgrades to some existing vessels, within the next five years. Deepwater involves the purchase of up to 91 ships and the upgrade of 49 cutters.
