The recent onslaught of genomic data from completion of the initial draft of the human genome project (HGP) brings to light the need for reliable data mining tools to create meaningful knowledge out of all the different data sets available and all the variations that data takes on as its form. But the HGP is just one of many data-intensive projects that have arisen over the past decade, challenging researchers to solve problems as diverse as earthquakes, astronomical observations, weather, multimedia events, high-throughput screening correlations, and Internet searches.
