EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first of a two part look at the evolution of association governance. This article illustrates the concerns involved in developing and sustaining a culture that supports the will to govern well. The second part, to be published in November's issue, will document experiences of several associations that have begun to focus on improving knowledgeability, trust, and nimbleness and have achieved a degree of success in evolving governance.
