Ever since I moved to Minnesota 10 years ago, I've been on a quest to find the perfect North Woods resort. From the Brainerd lakes golf Goliaths to North Shore cottages; Canadian border lodges to Gunflint getaways, I've sampled a lot, feeling a bit like Goldilocks along the way.
Too big; too small. Too pretentious; kind of seedy. Great lodge, cramped cabins - decent cabins, no lodge. Great restaurant, no view. Or great view ... of a marshy swamp.
So when I accepted an invitation to a "really cool place" in Wisconsin last fall, my expectations were fairly low.
