SANTA ANA, Calif. _ The rate of new tuberculosis cases in Orange County rose by 11.5 percent in 2001, mirroring a statewide increase in the contagious disease _ and estimates this year indicate the problem isn't improving, health officials said.
"In Orange County, among communicable diseases, this is our biggest concern," said Dr. Mark Horton, deputy director of public health for the Orange County Health Care Agency.
The problem is greatest among Hispanic and Asian residents in California. In Orange County, Hispanics accounted for 106 cases, and Asians 144 of the county's 278 cases last year, according to a state report.
