Mayor Sue Bauman and others will push for rules to ban smoking in more Madison restaurants.
The Wisconsin Restaurant Association will likely fight hard against the changes, said Kathi Kilgore, director of government relations.
"We're not pro-smoking. We're pro-restaurant owner choice," she said.
But Ira Sharenow, the city's most vocal anti-smoking activist, said the proposed changes would come too slowly and aren't sweeping enough.
"It's very weak," he said.
