Sports car road racing, which was popular in Europe before World War II but little known in North America, owes its success in the United States to Cameron Argentsinger and the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce.
After the war, the Sports Car Club of America was focused on restoring old race cars, and it had no plans to organize races in the U.S. That was before Argentsinger, a lawyer from Youngstown, Ohio, who vacationed on the shores of Seneca Lake, talked to Chamber officials.
