The Prophet-Herald of the Baha'i Faith, established in Persia in the late 19th century, was the Bab. During a visit to Haifa, Israel in 1890, it was decided that a site on Mount Carmel would be the final resting place for the Bab's remains. Over a period of 60 years, his bones were secretly moved from place to place before the final interment in 1909 on the slopes of Mount Carmel, where the first structure of the Shrine of the Bab was built. The above-ground structure, known as the Golden Dome for its gilded top, was completed in 1953. Today it is one of Haifa's most well-known landmarks.
