Months of depressing events from massive job cuts to tumbling stock prices took their toll on Bay State consumer attitudes, making them more pessimistic about the economy, a survey released yesterday found.

In its latest reading on local sentiment, Mass Insight Corp.'s consumer confidence index fell by 17 points to 92 in July from 109 in April, mirroring national trends.

Jessica Marrocco, of Hull, said she's cautious due to the uncertainty surrounding the economy.

"I think more before I make a purchase of something that is not a necessity," Marrocco said. "I'm not making any frivolous purchases, that's for sure."
