I NEED TO QUIT hanging out in swamps. A few weeks ago I had a close encounter with a cottonmouth moccasin, and then a watersnake and I shared the same bit of shrubbery on a canoe trip. My most recent reptilian encounter came on a hiking trip in the mountains and it involved a rattlesnake.
We were on our way to Dark Hollow Falls in Shenandoah National Park and were hiking through a swampy area when my son, Tom, walking behind me, said, ``Hey, check out the snake.''
