THE comment from an American on board the boat to Venice said it all: "Oh, my Gad!" And you could almost excuse him as the sun had come out to show us the great sweep of the Grand Canal - bigger, brighter and more beautiful than any picture postcard.
Venice is one of the most beautiful places in the world and the only way to arrive is by water. A launch had collected us from Marco Polo airport and we were bowled over as the city unveiled itself through the light morning mist.
