The last two years have been a roller-coaster ride for Smiths Aerospace--most of it, fortunately, heading in the right direction. "Two years ago, I had just joined Smiths," says president and managing director Dr John Ferrie, "then we merged with TI, then we unveiled the new Aerospace organization and then there was the trauma of September 11th." With airlines in the doldrums after the attacks and commercial aircraft orders, for a while at least, in a period of freefall, the trauma was as acutely felt by Smiths as any other aerospace company.
