When the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance made its recitation in public-school classrooms an unconstitutional effort to establish a government religion, the reaction from Capitol Hill was fairly uniform. Outrage ricocheted from all corners. Liberal Democrats blocking 100 or so conservative judicial nominations raced to the House floor to distance themselves from this latest judicial foolishness.
But to Rep. Lynn Rivers (D-Mich.) the pledge is a laughing matter. At least that's the improbable claim her press people are making. When the 9th Circuit decision came down June 27, Rivers was in a House ...
