The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will make more than 60 reforms to its nearly $6 billion-a-year contracting operations to improve efficiency and extend its buying power for its healthcare system, according to a June 3, 2002, announcement. The VA expects to realize from $250 million to $450 million in savings for medical/surgical and prosthetic items alone over the next five years, as well as additional savings resulting from system and procedural improvements after the set of recommendations are implemented. The reforms are not expected to reduce the size of the VA's procurement workforce.
