MATALAN boss Paul Mason is hiring another one of his Asda pals, this time to replace finance director Ian Smith.
Phil Dutton, 41, left Asda in May after 12 years - the last three as IT director.
He joins Matalan next month and Smith 'resigns' in February.
'At the end of the day it was my decision,' said Mason. 'It is all very amicable, but Phil has a basket of skills that Ian doesn't have.' Mason, who joined from Asda in January, has already given two former colleagues plum jobs on Matalan's retail board.
Matalan fell 11/2p to 2351/2p, down from 560p a year ago.
