Aug. 14--Princeton University officials who snooped into confidential Yale University admissions files were motivated by simple curiosity and were not seeking a competitive advantage, according to an independent investigation of the incident commissioned by Princeton.
In accessing the files of eight students who had applied to both schools, the officials yielded to human error, compounded by the temptations of the Internet, said Princeton's president, Shirley M. Tilghman, as she described the results of the investigation at a news conference yesterday.
