WE'VE known for decades that folic acid - one of the B vitamins - prevents anaemia, and until recently it had quite a low profile.
Then it was found to lower the risk of malformations in the unborn baby such as spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
Now we know that all women who intend to become pregnant should take 400 micrograms of folic acid every day, starting three months before conception if possible, and continue right through pregnancy.
But folic acid has many more benefits for all of us, and may even save lives, ...
