Aug. 15--Jerry Goudy's West Virginia roots led him to the state's coal mines and work as a welder.

A passing interest in NASA's first shuttle mission more than 21 years ago left an impression that eventually led him to Florida and a job with the space agency.

Just days ago, Goudy's top-notch welding skills enabled NASA to repair the tiny fuel line cracks that grounded its shuttle fleet earlier this summer.
