Encouraging Pharmacists To Do More While an estimated 55 million couples now buy their family planning supplies in pharmacies (see p. 3), eight times as many could be pharmacy customers. Worldwide, about 447 million couples need temporary family planning. Hypothetically, all these couples could be buying contraceptives in pharmacies. This number includes 323 million in developing countries and 124 million in developed countries. (a)
In fact, people's income and their access to pharmacies limit who can buy contraceptives there. Thus a more realistic estimate of the number of potential pharmacy customers for family planning is about 211 million. In developing ...
