RABIES Rabies, or hydrophobia as it is sometimes known, is a dreaded disease. It was first recorded in ancient (2300B.C.) Mesopotamian law and has plagued man and animal since then.
In certain areas of the U.S. rabies has been increasing dramatically. Any warm blooded mammal is capable of being infected with rabies. Due to the widespread vaccination programs, rabies in dogs has almost been eliminated. Rabies in cats is now more common than in dogs. Wildlife rabies is principally associated with four species of animals: raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats. Rodents and rabbits are considered low risk animals for rabies.
