Katydids have all kinds of tricks for fooling their enemies. But they can't always fool a scientist who prowls the jungle in search of them.

ALL CLEAR?

A conehead katydid carefully crawls out from behind a leaf. The sharp cone on its head can be used as a weapon. Hey, hungry birds and monkeys--you'd better be careful!

LOOK-ALIKES

Some katydids (photo 1) look like green leaves, complete with fake bird droppings! Others look like fallen leaves (2) or like lichens that grow on branches (3). One even looks like a wasp (4). (Who'd mess with THAT?) Others (5) have colors that warn, "We're poisonous!"
