Synthetics Share in Woes of Oil Market as Feedstock Prices Jump
With crude oil prices so high, one might think synthetic-based greases are more price-competitive these days.
One would be wrong, say synlube makers.
"Unfortunately, most of our products have their origin in petroleum products," sighs Harry Pinchevsky, aviation accounts manager at Royal Lubricants Co. Inc., a major synlube manufacturer. Raw material costs are going up -- and so are prices for synthetics. "Ethylene, for example, is derived from natural gas or petroleum oils, and ethylene prices are increasing," he says.
