This past June 28, a 44-foot wooden lobster boat slid down the rails of the Ralph W. Stanley boatshop in Southwest Harbor, Maine. It is the first commercial fishing boat to come out of the Southwest Harbor boatshop since 1983--when fiberglass was replacing wood as the building material of choice--though plenty of wooden pleasure boats have been built and repaired in that period.
The new lobster boat was built for Chris Lutygens, a Jamestown, R.I., fisherman. The 44' x 14' 6" x 5' boat is an expanded version of a design of the same length, but narrower and deeper, that Stanley had previously built.
