SUPPLY AND demand have been generally balanced in the caustic potash market in North America. Pricing has been stable in this market, and two price increase announcements made over the last two years have been met with mixed results. The most recent increase, announced last October, was only marginally accepted in the industry and was later withdrawn in January.
Operating rates are in the mid-to-high 80s overall, says Kurt Wright, business manager of caustic potash, Occidental Chemical Corp., the market leader. Imports and exports "are relatively insignificant in this market, only accounting for 20,000 tons of the overall supply in the merchant market," he notes. ...
